IPIX Virtual tour file errors - August 4, 2006

With IPIX filing for bankruptcy on Monday, July 31 2006, a number of clients, customers, and general Internet surfers will be affected when attempting to view or create IPIX virtual tours.

For clients, the obvious dilemma is that IPIX no longer exists. If ever they desire to see their interactive content updated in the future they will need to look into different companies or products to determine what will help develop their 360-degree imagery going forward.

Customers who purchased licenses and equipment from IPIX unfortunately now have out-dated resources to create their virtual tours. License keys either no longer work at this very moment or will not work in the very near future. And due to its proprietary technology, the equipment and software used to create IPIX virtual tours cannot be used for other purposes or with other software.

General Internet surfers who are using computers that have not downloaded the IPIX Viewer will never be able to see content made with IPIX technology. The way it worked was, when coming to a page that featured an IPIX virtual tour, the page would check to see if you had the IPIX Viewer needed to view the content. If not you would be directed to IPIX's website to download the viewer. Unfortunately the IPIX website no longer exists, so users currently without the IPIX Viewer will never have the IPIX Viewer. As a result you may get messages such as "File Format No Longer Supported?" and prompts to update your IPIX Viewer. Or it may be as simple as the content stalls and you're left with a blank screen.

Either way, the demise of IPIX is going to affect many people who create, would like to create, or simply enjoy viewing virtual tours on the Internet.
